December 19, 2009
Merry CHRISTmas and Happy New Year everyone! While I love Thanksgiving and the joy of CHRISTmas (Jesus is the reason for the season) my overall favorite holiday has always been New Years Eve (NYE). I just love the idea of entering into a new year with a clean slate and infinite possibilities and knowing how things can change so dramatically from year-to-year.
I typically celebrate NYE with a traditional party with friends but one time (2001) I did celebrated the New Year in a spiritual way, with meditation and my violin. I meditated most of the day alone until a half an hour until the new year and then played my violin through the count down. I played the second movement of Vivaldi's Spring and then had a glass of champagne. This year, I will be at the Baptiste studio in Cambridge with a few yogi friends and I honestly can't think of a better way to ring in the new year. Gregor will lead us through a two hour practice followed by a celebration. Playing classical music changed my life by broadening my horizons in ways I never imaged. Yoga has altered my life in ways that I can't even describe in a simple blog but I will do my best to express the gratitude for all the changes on December 31, 2009.
I can feel that big things are going to happen in 2010! I had a friend say to me recently that "all change is bad." I strongly (and respectfully) disagree. All change is GREAT! Please check back to my site to hear about amazing events with Om Enterprises Solutions. I am starting to organize some workshops, teacher training coaching services and ask the yogi advice column. Widening my horizons is paramount for the new year.. the time is right...the time is NOW!
Thanks for visiting and stay tuned for new events and services. This is YOUR year (2010). Make the most of it.
Namaste

MY SON IS LEAVING

A CHANGE IN DIRECTION
I originally planned on writing my next article about final savasana, the last pose in my yoga class. This pose brings with it a great moment of deep rest and healing. For a lot of people, this last pose of the class is often the hardest because in that moment all you have to face is yourself. If you are not comfortable in your own skin or do not manage well when being exposed, this stillness and silence may feel more like punishment rather than peace.
I had a recent experience that was triggered by my son Jaime’s big plans to join the United States Coast Guard this year. I feel compelled to share this healing with the intention of helping someone else who may be going through a similar experience.
Jaime and I have talked about his plans for college ever since he was a little boy. We didn’t linger on what his major would be but that it was important for him to go not just for the education but for the experience as well. I didn’t get the chance to finish college as a young adult and had sacrificed a lot to finally graduate as a single mother in my 30’s. Of course I want my son to have the full experience of college earlier in his life while he is young, single and free.
My greatest fear came to pass when Jaime returned home from school beaming over his new plans to join the United States Coast Guard. If you could image the dramatic stories created in my mind about how this was bad news and he would get hurt and possibly die and what about going to war, what about college and now he will never go, and so on……
I finally calmed down, did my research and realized that this could be a wonderful experience for him. He’ll learn discipline, get in the best shape of his life in bootcamp and get to do what I’ve only dreamed of doing: TRAVEL THE WORLD.
Now passing all the false evidence appearing real situations (FEARS) I found myself to be at peace and looking forward to Jaime’s new life.
LISTENING
Now having moved through the fear of my son’s recent choice, I had another lovely opportunity for emotional healing: The EMPTY NEST SYNDROME. I talk in great detail in my classes about the difference between the mind’s intellect and the body’s intellect. These are two entirely different sources of information that we have at our disposal. Unfortunately, we were never trained or taught in school on how to listen to our body’s knowledge (our inner wisdom). However, life will give us plenty of opportunities to practice hearing.
My son leaving was going to give me a chance to live my life for myself and to do things I’ve always sacrificed and put off in the name of motherhood. Knowing that his departure would be sorrowful, I decided to schedule my sadness for July when he departs for bootcamp (as if I had a choice to schedule emotional sadness). I found out the hard way that you just can’t pick a day to grieve, especially when your body has something to say about it. One morning I woke up with what looked like a pink eye. The doctor confirmed it was only an irritation that would go away on its own. So I used a lot of visine and covered that up. Days later, I grew a strange blister on the right side of the bridge of my nose so I wore my glasses and makeup to camouflage the mark. Then, a red rash around my mouth started to form days after covering up the blister. I have never experienced anything like this. As I covered one thing, something else popped up. That’s when I realized that my body was trying to get my attention.
BE STILL AND KNOW
Your body’s intelligence is smarter than you realize. The emotions that I refused to face (no pun intended) were coming up and my body chose my face to deliver this message. Once I noticed a pattern it was easy to come to the conclusion that some stillness was needed in order to find the inner wisdom that I kept myself distracted from hearing. In this place of stillness, I realized that my heart was heavy with sadness and I cried like it was my last day to live. I cried to my son and confessed my deep sadness about him leaving. He was both flattered and amused. My face, like magic, in a few days was cleared.
I shared this wisdom in my yoga classes with the hope of helping those who may be experiencing the same thing. So often we hold in our situations, emotions, anger, etc. inside ourselves, which then acts like poison, but be assured that the body doesn’t approve of this and has something to say about it. The body will find a way to communicate to you whether it’s in the form of an illness or a dull or achy pain that may be mysterious in some way. It’s not uncommon to hear about people going to the doctor for an illness but yet the doctor can’t find the cause or a cure. It could be that all we need to do is BE STILL AND LISTEN. It’s in this stillness that our true nature can be revealed. In this stillness, we have an infinite source of knowledge available to us if you allow yourself to receive it.
BLESSING IN DISGUISE
I am blessed to have had this experience as it has taught me to honor what comes up to the surface and to exercise my ability to discern more clearly what my body is trying to communicate. It takes courage to look deep inside of ourselves when what we have to look at is not so pleasant. So often we search for a distraction when we are feeling uncomfortable but if you face what you fear you become fearless. If you can feel it you can heal it. I will miss my son in ways that words cannot convey. This year is truly a new beginning for him as well as for myself. I wish him well on his new journey and I know that God has his hands on him and will continue to guide and protect. His roots are deep and his wings are big. I celebrate and bless his journey as he embraces his gifts, conquers the world and becomes the best version of himself so he can live a purposeful life and one day, he will help someone else become the best that they can be.
Namaste!

MEN ON THE MAT
April 18, 2007
How come every yoga class I take is filled primarily with women? Why don’t more men practice yoga? These were questions I asked myself when I started studying yoga five years ago. I also thought that if a guy wanted to meet a girl all he had to do was take a yoga class. There’s certainly no shortage of women there. He could possibly meet a nice girl while getting in the best shape of his life (physically, spiritually and mentally). Easy… Right?
Apparently not!
Suddenly, that idea alone made me question the absence of men on the mat even further. So, why the lack of a male presence in the classroom? Surely, there has to be a good explanation. As long as I can remember, men were always game for meeting women regardless of where. Fast forward 5 years. Yoga now has become a big part of my life and has changed me in many fabulous ways. It was only natural for me to teach this to the world, one classroom at a time. However, the lack of men in the classroom was still prevalent. I decided to inquire more about why and to see if there was a way I can somehow make a small change in this vast and limitless world of yoga dominated by women and attended by only a few men.
I recently did a little bit of my own research. I created a survey for men who have taken my class but have never tried yoga before (or did it only once). The results were very interesting………
So Yoga is a chick thing, right?
Ummm.. no. Just ask the men in India that question. More men practice yoga there then woman.
I had a great experience teaching men just this past March 2007. An army sergeant from a local base contacted the fitness director at one of the gyms that I teach at. He was looking for a kick boxer instructor to come to the base to teach a class. No one at the gym responded to the opportunity. In my attempt to understand why men don’t choose to practice yoga, I contacted the sergeant myself and asked if he wouldn’t mind having a power yoga class instead so that I can prove to the military men that power yoga is just as good as a kick boxing class and they would experience a great workout and lots of fun. I even offered to do the class for free because I was confident that they would enjoy it on some level or at least be more aware of the various styles of yoga available, particularly power yoga. The sergeant was open to trying this out and he immediately scheduled me in to run a class after I explained in detail the benefits of taking a power yoga class.
I did have a class of approximately nine men who bravely showed up. I had them sweating in the first 15 minutes. It was fun to watch. One man commented on the survey that he thought yoga was a meditation tool with some stretching. Some believed yoga to be only one of two styles; one with stretching and one with more isometric type moves. My guess is that even though I said it was a “power” class, sweating and strength building was not what most men associated with yoga. Last year I taught a class and one man in attendance shouted out, “hey, this isn’t yoga” as we got into the core strength series. I had them working the abs by doing various forms of sit ups (which helps with everything in yoga) but his little knowledge of yoga certainly didn’t include working with the abs at all.
The majority of men who did my survey said they never really gave yoga any thought at all. They want a workout that is more aggressive and challenging or, dare I say it, manlier! They also like to have something they can measure their fitness against. There is no way for a man to measure his performance in yoga in the same way he can with bench pressing because the only weight you lift in yoga is your own body weight. If that were true (lack of measurable and visible results) then yoga for most men could get incredibly boring. This is not what they would soon understand after a power yoga class. There are many levels in this practice that can keep you challenged for years to come. Let’s just say the power yoga class was a big eye opener for a lot of those men in my class. And no, we did not put our foot behind our heads. We do poses that anybody at any fitness level can handle. If a student wants to deepen or extend the pose, then those options will be available to them as well.
A lawyer in his early forties said in my survey that after taking a power yoga class that he felt he had pushed himself (body) to do a lot of work and things he would not otherwise have even thought to do. He also noticed that it helped him with his batting in baseball.
Surprise Surprise!!
I will admit that I never gave much thought about men feeling uncomfortable being in a yoga class full of women. One male student said to me that he would not have gone to a yoga class on his own uninvited. He felt that women would rather he not be there gawking at them. He also noticed that all the men set up in the front row of the class and all the women who arrived first went to the back.
Now this is something I never paid much attention to but I guess it can be intimidating for a man to come into a world dominated by women, moving their bodies in ways that might seem a little feminine in nature (i.e. dancers pose). Feminine as it may seem, power yoga has a masculine component to it that most men will appreciate. For me, there’s just the right balance of both the masculine and feminine in the power yoga practice. Beside all of that, a man who confidently embraces his feminine side is sexy to me!
Conclusion
Through my survey results, I learned that the key to get men more interested in yoga is quite simple. You just have to be direct and tell them about the benefits and results. No need to get into the spiritual connection (albeit the most rewarding part of the practice for me personally) or anything too esoteric. That will come in perfect timing. As I say, don’t force anyone to find yoga, let yoga find them. It might also help to tell them that women welcome them in the classroom. I enjoy getting a kick out of daring men to take my class. That seems to work. They come in the hopes of proving me wrong. Instead, leave with a newfound respect and oftentimes, shocked that they actually feel so energized and relaxed at the same time. Some really do come back for more.
There are so many different styles of yoga and finding one that works best for you can be quite the journey. For me, it reminds me of the time when I was searching for the best way to cook tofu. I tried many recipes but my taste buds were always disappointed. This year I recently was taught how to make tofu (thank you Amy) in a way that is enjoyable beyond words. It took years of searching but was well worth the wait. I’m eating it all the time and my body really enjoys it. Now, if I can only find the same discovery with sushi……………………
Namaste!
Darlene
P.S. Stay tuned for my next article on FINAL SAVASANA (aka Corpse Pose). In final shavasana, the moment of rest, healing, rejuvenation and meditation, all you have to face in that moment is yourself. For a lot of people, this last pose of the class is often the hardest.

FIREFest 2006
A celebration of the visual, performing and culinary arts in the Heart of Downtown Nashua
Nashua, NH September 1, 2006 On October 8, Downtown Nashua will come alive with the sounds of live music, street dancing, multi- cultural food offerings and offerings of fine arts and crafts as the City of Nashua, in a unique public/private collaboration with Amethyst Wyldfyre and OM Enterprises Solutions, Inc. presents the First Annual FIREFest from 2-8 pm, on East Pearl Street.
Inspired by the question "Can Mermaids Dance in a Sea of Fire?", the festival will take over East Pearl Street which will be closed down to traffic and turned into a pedestrian mall with food, art, live music, street entertainment and other fun activities for the young and old alike.
Featuring 2 stages with a lineup of 15 stage performances, street performers, a variety of visual artists and fine craftsmen, extraordinary food from some of the best downtown eateries, demonstrations and an engine & crew from the Nashua Fire Department, FIREFest is sure to have something of interest for everyone.
"We are so excited to be a part of the creation of this event" says Amethyst Wyldfyre, the visionary artist and owner of the gallery of the same name located on East Pearl Street. "It has been an incredibly gratifying experience to work with the various City Departments, and especially the Mayor's office and the Economic Development Office to make this dream vision a reality." "So many have come forward to devote their time and energy to manifest this event and we are really fired up for October 8th."
"It's been my dream since I opened my gallery that Nashua would become a destination location for the arts and I really believe that this event will put us on the map like no other." Ms. Wyldfyre is partnering with Darla Pina, President and CEO of OM Enterprises Solutions, Inc. to coordinate and provide the adminstrative services necessary to facilitate an event of this size. "I'm really pumped to be involved with FIREFest" says Ms. Pina. "From the moment I heard the idea, I just knew I had to be involved." "It's been a tremendous experience to work with Amethyst and also with City officials, especially Jay Minkhara, the City's Economic Development Director who has been an integral part of the planning and execution of this event."
Featuring live performances on the City's stage from Truffle, Fresh Taste out of the Berklee School of Music, State of Mind and Nashua bands Crazy Jane and Emily Rose, East Pearl Street will be rocking and rolling all day long. Two performance pavilions will be erected, one in the parking lot behind Brian Moses' building at the corner of Main and E. Pearl which will feature live comedy, acoustic music and live theatrical performances and the other in the parking lot adjacent to Amethyst Wyldfyre which will provide space for festival goers to sit and enjoy the music from the main stage. Dancing will be encouraged and the FRANK FM 106.3 van will be onsite all day as well.
"We are really enthusiastic about the expected turnout for this event as it's scheduled in the middle of a long weekend, during leaf peeping season when all the trees are on fire and we have been invited to cross promote with the Nashua World Cup Soccer Tournament which is in town for the weekend. Over 200 teams will be in town and we wanted to bring an event to Downtown Nashua that would enhance their experience of our fine City." says Jay Minkhara. "I think that people will find that Nashua is continuing to evolve into a City that can support a broad range of cultural experiences and events like FIREFest can only add to the appeal of Downtown and the City of Nashua overall."
